An Introduction to Music Reading class will be held in the music room (ground floor) on Wednesdays in May at 7:30 p.m. If you have ever wondered what all those dots, dashes and squiggles mean, this class is for you. The class will cover musical terms, pitch and rhythm notation on the grand staff and the beginning of how to “translate” this written language into sound using your own voice as the instrument. Class is fun and informative with no performance pressure.

Call Eric Riley at 257-1281 for further information.

Class dates are May 7, 14, 21 & 28; class time from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Sunday, May 18 we celebrate the Adult Choir in worship using masterpieces ancient and modern. From the Renaissance, the choir will present the Missa Secunda of Hans Leo Hassler, and from our own time Arma Lucis by Jackson Berkey. Hassler was a famous organist and composer in Germany during the late 1500s. His fame came primarily from “importing” Italian-style polyphony to Germany after studying in Venice. His music was used in both the Roman Catholic and Lutheran liturgies. In addition to being a composer of “serious” church music, Jackson Berkey is the keyboard player for Mannheim Steamroller. “The Armor of Light” is a hymn to St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, and mixes Gregorian chant with contemporary idioms to produce a powerful and engaging work. Come and support our wonderful volunteer singers.

Another reason to come to church on Memorial Day Weekend: The faculty brass quintet from Messiah College will be in worship with us on May 25. They will present service music for brass quintet and music for brass and organ with Eric Riley. Don’t miss this first “appearance” with us by one of the area’s outstanding brass ensembles.

Mark your calendars for Friday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. when fine organ music will fill the sanctuary in a Buon Viaggio Concert given by our new Music Director/ Organist, Eric Riley. Eric will perform the program he is playing in Florence, Bologna and Gaggio, Italy later in June. And…it is our first chance to “present” Eric to the public in this region. The program emphasizes organ music from “Baroque” Germany and “Romantic” France. Come and bring your friends. A “meet and greet” reception follows the one-hour-long concert program.
