THE CHURCH LIBRARY
The church library, located centrally on the 4th floor, was made possible through gifts to the Doorway to the Future Campaign, from the Tuten family in memory of Sarah Tuten and from Sara Jane and Don Cate. These gifts provided shelving, comfortable new furniture, air conditioning, a library computer catalog, a card catalog and the library supplies that were needed to catalog and process the collection.
The 1,500 volume collection has books for children, teens and adults. Jonelle Darr (librarian and executive director of the Cumberland County Library System) leads a team of volunteers who maintain the library which features:
Each item catalogued, using the Dewey Decimal system;
Each book marked with computer-generated labels with appropriate DD number;
A protective clear plastic book jacket for all hardback books;
A new card catalog that lists each item’s title, author, illustrator or subject area. The library’s holdings are also listed in the library’s new computer catalog.
Church members may borrow items by signing the circulation card at the back of each item and leaving the card in the designated file box. Items are usually loaned for one month.
DONATE!
Gifts to the Market Square Church Library collection are welcome. To be sure that the items are needed by the library, Market Square maintains wish lists on Amazon.com from which donors may select. Donations may be made by:
- Making a direct purchase directly from the Amazon.com wish lists (see below) and donating the item to the church.
- Making a financial gift to the church, specifying which items the donor would like to purchase; or
- Making a general financial gift to the church, designating the funds for the Church Library.
If the item purchased is in memory or in honor of an individual or group, an acknowledgement card can be sent to the individual(s), telling them of your gift. To make a gift, please contact church librarian Jonelle Darr ( Jonelle.darr@comcast.net) or Christian Educator Cindy Sproat (Sproat@marketsquarechurch.org ), or by calling 257-1280
Gift Policy
Materials as Gifts to the Library
Gifts or donations of materials to the collection can be in the form of money or actual materials. These items are added to the collection solely at the discretion of the Pastoral staff and Library Committee. Gifts and donations are evaluated in accordance with the Church’s Basic Criteria for Selecting Items and the other parameters outlined in this policy.
If a gift of materials is accepted by the Church Library, the item(s) becomes the property of the Library, to be used or disposed of as determined by the Library.
Upon request, the donor can receive a written acknowledgement of the gift. Church staff are not able appraise the items or indicate a value in the acknowledgment letter.
Memorial or Tribute Gift Items
Financial contributions in the form of memorial or tribute gifts are accepted by Market Square Presbyterian Church. Books or other materials are added to the collection, usually in memory or honor of an individual or group. While the donor’s suggestions for purchase are welcomed by the Library Committee for its consideration, selections for memorials are the responsibility of the Pastoral staff and Library Committee.
A memorial may be placed in the Library collection, either for reference or circulating use. It will carry a memorial book plate, and records of the gift will be maintained by the Library until the item is no longer in use.
