Market Square Art Gallery

Harry Spilker

January and February

Artists are among prophets in our society, helping us to understand who God is and how God is calling us in fresh ways. We rely on artists to stretch our imaginations and keep us in awe of the largeness of God. We are committed to supporting artists in our congregation and community by providing a gallery space.  The gallery is located in the atrium beside the sanctuary and in Geneva Hall, on the fourth floor of the church.  A new artist or group of artists are displayed every two months.  If you are interested in purchasing any of the works, please speak directly to the artist as the church does not handle any sales or receive any fees.

Harry Spilker

Harry’s work will be displayed in the atrium and Geneva Hall in January and February with an artist reception on January 5th immediately following worship in Geneva Hall.

Harry Spilker is a 25-year old young man with Down syndrome, living with his family in Camp Hill.  Harry is a 2015 graduate of Camp Hill High School and an employee at Community Aid.

Harry has always been a self-motivated artist, drawing with markers, colored pencils, and other media by himself as a child.  As a teenager, he began using his father's cell phone and taking astonishing pictures.  He now uses his digital camera or iPhone to capture images, and he uses different apps to manipulate the colors and other aspects of the pictures, creating an artistic effect.   He especially likes to photograph everyday objects and scenes and then create boldly colored abstract pieces that evoke an emotional response.

Harry says about his art, “I like to photograph nature and the environment around the community.  I especially like taking pictures of trees and clouds and the Susquehanna river in all different lights.  I take lots of pictures of my dad.  I like to use different apps on my iPhone to mix colors and change the shape and size of the images.  I think my photographs make a statement about how I see the world.”
