Special Arts on the Square exhibit in honor of the Korean Members’ 50th anniversary April 14, 2024

Noted Korean-born American artist SoHyun Bae will be featured in a special exhibit at Market Square Presbyterian Church, Sunday, April 14 through Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Ms. Bae will display her painting series, “The Four Bows,” in the church’s historic Geneva Hall, in honor of Korean members who will be celebrating 50 years at Market Square Church on April 14.  An exhibit opening at the noon hour in Geneva Hall following 11:00 a.m. worship will be part of the Korean member anniversary festivities.  Ms. Bae is scheduled to join us at Market Square for the opening.

Ms. Bae was inspired to create “The Four Bows” when she was living in Italy with her family 20 years ago.  An admirer of Italian culture and style, she envisioned the series as moving through a medieval labyrinth where she was bowing.  The heads depicted in this monumental work on paper are shown as they bow forward and take on the shape of a Korean ceramic bottle as it pours a traditional libation.  “…my desire is to get to the essence of things, the elemental, the essential,” says Ms. Bae.

A painter who lives and works in New York City, Ms. Bae received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design; a Master of Fine Arts from Boston University; and a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School where she studied with Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel. Her works have been exhibited worldwide in galleries and museums including the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, and Seoul Arts Center Hangaram Museum, and the Museo Nacional di Visual Artes in Montevideo, Uruquay, among others.

In 2018 Ms. Bae collaborated with the Martha Graham Dance Company as Guest Artist for “Graham + Google,” where she drew dancers in 3D using Google’s latest technology. She was also featured as Guest Artist in the MG Studio Series “GrahamDeconstructed: Steps in the Street with SoHyun Bae” in 2019 where she drew the dancers LIVE.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in Fine Arts and The National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.

As part of our Arts on the Square Initiative and Market Square Church's ministry to support the arts, we host gallery showings of 2-D art created by members and select local artists in the Arts in the Square Gallery space.   Each exhibit is displayed for approximately two months.  With each exhibit, we have an opening artist reception that is held on a Sunday, following our church service, from 12:00 noon-1:30 p.m.  Church members and the public are invited to attend.

If you are interested in having your artwork considered for exhibition, please contact Beth Hager, art gallery coordinator, at bahager@earthlink.net for an artist application or for more information about the gallery.
