Youth Group

Greetings! It’s a gardening kind of summer!

Information below about July 11th youth group, August 15th Youth Group, and our Pollinator Garden!

Sunday, July 11 from 1PM – 3PM

What:  Harrisburg Master Gardener Cindy Hogeman will meet us at the Green Belt Five Senses Garden. We’ll learn about the gardens and experience the plants using all our senses, especially in the taste garden which Market Square keeps. We will also help Cindy do some weeding and mulch spreading as needed. Youth should bring gardening gloves if you have them and water for drinking. I hope to have some time to ask youth for their input into next year’s activities.

Where: Drop off and pick up at the Trail Parking Lot located on Dauphin Manor Drive. This spot is a large lot, enables us to avoid crossing streets, and provides a quick bathroom stop before heading to the garden. Hopefully we’ll be able to grab a McFlurry at the end as well! There is no exact address so here is a link to a map showing the Parking lot: Trail Parking Lot  or drop these coordinates in googlemaps:   40.25475488853722, -76.83928107493276

RSVP: By Wednesday, July 8th please let me know if your and/or your youth will be attending. If it is raining we will meet at the church in Geneva Hall in order to be socially distanced.

Sunday, August 15 from 1PM – 3PM

What:  Exploring Market Square’s Peace Garden and doing a trash pickup along the river. At this meeting I’ll continue to seek input from youth about next year’s activities.

Where: Drop off and pick up at my house which is 1943 Green St. in Harrisburg. It’s only a short walk from there to the Peace Garden.

RSVP: By Sunday, August 8 please let me know if your and/or your youth will be attending. If it is raining, we will meet at the church in Geneva Hall in order to be socially distanced.

Pollinator Garden

Phyllis Mooney and I would like to invite the youth to take responsibility for their Pollinator Garden on the Green Belt. It doesn’t need a lot of tending but Phyllis has been weeding and watering since we met there in May. We’re asking each family to commit to one or even two ½ hour periods on a Saturday morning of your choosing. If needed, one of us will be there to help guide as well. Here is a signup Genius so we only have the one needed family per week: Pollinator Garden Sign-up I’ve put the time in at 9AM but we can be flexible and might prefer earlier if it’s hot!

If you’ve read this far, please know that I continue to look for other volunteer and service opportunities, but the truth is that with Covid, most agencies are only allowing those who are 18 and older to volunteer. We’ll hopefully have more options next year and definitely next summer when we plan to resume mission trips, etc. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with ideas or questions!

Please rsvp for the above events and choose a time to help out at the Youth Pollinator Garden!

Peace,

Kim

Youth Group

Youth Group combines middle and high school youth and meets about once a month after worship.  Youth Group offers young people an opportunity for fellowship as well as service to members of Market Square and the wider community.  Because the young people who attend Market Square come from a variety of school districts, some traveling over 40 miles to participate, we encourage activities that help the young people get to know each other and maintain friendships.

This past summer, the youth group tackled an environmental project and created a pollinator garden along the Greenbelt in Harrisburg to help our bees, butterflies, and other insects, and beautify the area.
